The Last Ship (2014)

The Last Ship is an American post-apocalyptic drama tv series based on the novel of the same name by William Brinkley. Published in May 2013.

The cable network TNT initially placed an order for 10 episodes, it now spans 3 seasons.

U.S.A Navel Commander Tom Chandler and his crew find themselves in a whole new world when the ship's scientist passenger, Dr. Rachel Scott reveals that while they have been in radio silence for the last four months on a training exercise in the Antarctic the entire of earth's population is either fighting a virus or have been killed from it.

Tom makes some tough choices when he realizes his own actual mission was just a scam to buy them time so she can try and recover an original strain of the virus from the ice. But when radio silence is broken the Russian's pick up the signal and launch an attack on the away party. When she makes it back to the ship with the samples, the russians are hot on their trail. They want her and the samples.

The crew and their trusty ship "USS Nathan James DDG-151" set sail from Antarctica in search of fuel and supplies while the dr attempts to compare the viral strains and come up with a cure, meanwhile the crew grow more and more suspicious with the lack of information being told to them by the higher ranking officers.

They do venture off the ship at a mixture of harbour ports, docks and islands in search for supplies and later on in search for monkeys to try test vaccines on. But with an adaptive virus its harder to combat when its constantly evolving into a much deadlier pathogen that it first started out as.

Running out of monkeys, running out of time, she's alone working every moment she can, while the crew hates her because most their families died of the virus and none of them got to say goodbye. Loyalties are pushed to the limit between the crew as a rogue element tries to cause a rift (yeah theirs always one) but at least its not who they where leaning it towards which made a refreshing change.

The mini intro is a bit lame and seams to hide a bigger picture, which makes me wonder of at some stage it will divert its self to another group of survivors on land (splitting the stories between two lots of cast) But it would allow for flashbacks. A plot is certainly building with its spy on board the american ship, while the russian ship seams to have a mysterious dr who could be the cause.

For actress Rhona Mitra as Dr. Rachel Scott, a paleomicrobiologist. This isn't her first acting role within a Viral Outbreak disaster and many of you may remember her from "Doomsday" from 2012. Featuring an outbreak in Scotland and a wall built to keep the infected out of England



With Music by Steve Jablonsky and Nathan Whitehead, and Executive Producer Michael Bay Sets this 10 part series in stone. If you want to know more after watching the series, why not read the book.

Character Profile Bob Williams

Colonel Bob Williams:  Location... Classified..

Bob Williams.. Former British S.A.S retried in 1985 and moved to the United States in 1986 to work on the human genome project.  Bob was later recruited by the C.I.A to help the C.D.C work on varied cures for (rumored) impending genetic bio warfare.    To this day.. no one will say if it was bob who flew callsign charlie on the Fortuna Glacier rescue.

 

With a number of degrees in biology, chemistry & physics he led a secondary team under the centers leader James Watson and they began to pave the way for D.N.A manipulation within a living subject rather than just cells in a petri dish. When funding from the military came in James & Bob both resigned and went back to normal civilian life.

Bob later flew an Oil Rig Transport Helicopter for a company on the Island of Nogova but grew tired of a chauffeur job transporting suits.. especially when he new the workers spent 2 days on a boat to get back and forth from work to their families.


He later ended up a volunteer pilot for the Medevac team working with the main Nogova hospital air rescue team. Tasked with flying anything from patients to hearts that where ready for transplant.  Often a mundane job many thought, but none the less.. He thought.. it's a job not everyone can do and is worthy my time.  He still works their to today and it was where he met his wife...

He married around a year and a half later after leaving the C.D.C and had 2 children  

(a son, and then a daughter 4 years later)

 

His wife and daughter where killed in a crash when the bus they where on got shunted though a railroad crossing barrier, by a truck driver who had fallen asleep at the wheel.   

In Local News

 His son later went missing while backpacking around the world, he was last seen in Russia acording to airport & immigration records, but no one is sure where he is.  Benjamin Williams was presumed dead 6 months after he vanished, due to no further sightings or any from of ransom demand.

Bob still fly's for the medevac unit but only on the holiday seasons (to give the regular pilots some family time in the holidays) bob spends most his other free time at a cabin up by eagle lake, gardening, growing his own food, tinkering with his own helicopter & writing white papers for the science journals. Its rumored hes an avid musician to, but rarely gets out the guitar or jumps on the piano.

  Sometimes he does some Stunt Flying & Arial Camera Work for a friend of the cabin owner.

Location Classified

In his more colourful days bob lead many missions he'd rather not talk about & don't get him started on the Gulf War.  He visited many countries looking for rumored bio warfare labs but found him and his team just being used by corrupt governments and private organizations to take down drug labs from uncooperative cartels. That's why he resigned his commission and walked away from the British Armed Services. He never did like the politics and red tape..

The Day After... This kinda follows on the lines of "Threads" only it avoids the documentary and informative basis and lays it down as a movie of   "What If"  Its the same concept as the British 2 part video called  "Threads"

An oddly cast Steve Guttenberg best known for Mahony on Police Academy and he starred in the classic film Short Circuit Anyways.. he portrays a guy just trying to survive and help out. He did pretty will in such a serious role & shone new light on his acting ability.

The Walking Dead CBS Mini Series

With a stack of comics already out & a stack of fans to match.. It's not really surprising this classic comic book tale became a Tv Series.

Although the series is based on the comics there are differences including the inclusion of a character not featured in the comic book series.

One of the main downsides of this show is its "Official Website"  is "Blocked"  by AMC to anyone in the UK.  AND Even Worse.. when you by the UK Region 2 DVDs they are cut and lack large sections of scenes removing the majority of the action.

This has forced most people to either Buy the USA Region 1 dvds or download Torrent versions of the show after they air on AMC.
